Puh-faf
I talked to my mom last night, who is an avid quilter. She bought a new computerized sewing machine a few years ago, but she still has her old Pfaff, which is about 30 years old now. She said my dad paid like a thousand dollars for it when it was new. Pfaffs are like the Campagnolos of sewing machines. And she said she'd be happy to lend it to me!! So awesome! She also wants me to take a few days off around Christmas so we can sew together. I'm stoked because my dad and I have cycling and current events to talk about, but before this, all my mom and I would talk about was my relationships and clothes and movies. It's nice to have a hobby to share with her. My grandma and my aunt are also mad about sewing (although my grandma's arthritis makes it harder these days). My aunt makes really artistic embroidered abstract painting-looking quilt things with beads and shells and stuff sewn into them, and she paints them.

In related news, I've been looking at beautiful printed fabric online. I'll make a post about it later when I have all my bookmarks (at home). There's some super-rad stuff out there, I think because my generation is aging and becoming domestic.

I love fabrics. I would greatly enjoy a post about them. These people have some of my favorite printed fabrics. *sigh*

Yes! Sewing and quilting are my new favourite hobbies. They're different than knitting because you have to be at home attached to a machine...

I think that I love quilting because all the art i like is some sort of collection--and in quilting you take all these beatiful bits of fabric designed by others and assemble them into something different. Clutter is also an important aesthetic of quiliting, which I like.

When my papers are done for this term I am going to make this dress http://flickr.com/photos/dorywithserifs/2496790411/in/photostream/ in blue courduroy with yellow and pink octopus fabric for teh sleves. It's going to make me very very happy.
